Sunsari (सुनसरी)

Dharan is a vibrant, modern, and clean city nestled at the foothills of the Mahabharat range in Sunsari. Historically famous as a major British Gurkha recruitment center, it has evolved into a key commercial, educational, and cultural hub of eastern Nepal, often nicknamed 'Mini Brazil' due to its love for football and trendy lifestyle. The city features wide roads, beautiful residential quarters, and a cool, pleasant climate compared to the southern plains. Dharan serves as the primary gateway to the eastern hilly districts. It offers a lively food culture, shopping markets like Bhanu Chowk, and active adventure options like paragliding from Dharan Sky.

Barahakshetra is one of the four most sacred Hindu pilgrimage sites (Dhams) in Nepal, situated at the scenic confluence of the Koka and Sapta Koshi rivers. The temple is dedicated to the Varaha (boar) incarnation of Lord Vishnu, who is believed to have destroyed the demon Hiranyaksha at this exact spot to save the Earth. The temple complex is filled with historic stone carvings, small shrines, and a serene, deeply spiritual atmosphere. Devotees visit Barahakshetra throughout the year, with massive crowds gathering during the holy Maghe Sankranti festival in January to take sacred baths in the river and perform religious rituals.

Bhedetar is a world-famous hill station situated at an altitude of 1,420 meters on the border of Sunsari and Dhankuta districts. It is renowned for its rapidly shifting weather, where thick, cool mountain fog can roll in and completely blanket the bazaar, only to clear up and reveal bright sunshine within a few minutes. The spot is heavily visited by domestic and Indian tourists seeking a quick escape from the heat of the plains. A major highlight is Charles Point (named after British Prince Charles who visited in 1980), which features a view tower offering panoramic views of the Sapta Koshi river, the Terai plains, and the Himalayas.

Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve is a globally recognized Ramsar wetland site, spanning 176 square kilometers of mudflats, reed beds, and freshwater marshes in the floodplains of the mighty Koshi River. It was established in 1976 to protect the last remaining population of the wild water buffalo (Arna) in Nepal. The reserve is a paradise for birdwatchers, supporting over 500 species of resident and migratory birds, including the rare Bengal florican. Visitors can enjoy peaceful canoe rides along the river channels, take guided jungle walks, and spot endangered Gangetic dolphins, marsh crocodiles, and wild elephants.

These three historic temples located in the Vijayapur hill region of Dharan form the spiritual core of the city. Pindeshwar is a sacred Shiva temple where the oil lamp is kept burning continuously; Dantakali is a Shakti Peetha representing the spot where Goddess Sati's tooth fell; Budha Subba is a unique temple dedicated to a Kirati hunter-deity. Budha Subba is famous for its unique bamboo groves, where devotees tie colorful sacred threads around the bamboo stalks to make wishes. These temples attract thousands of pilgrims during festivals like Shrawan Sombar and Dashain, representing a harmonious blend of Hindu and indigenous Kirat spiritual practices.

Talatalaiya is a beautiful, community-managed wetland park located on the outskirts of Itahari city. Spanning over several hectares of lush green forest and natural water bodies, the park has been developed into a highly popular recreational center featuring boating lakes, children's playgrounds, and picnic spots. A unique feature of Talatalaiya is its outdoor stone sculpture garden, which displays beautifully crafted statues made by national and international artists during a symposium. The park protects critical lowland wetland ecosystems, providing a quiet, family-friendly escape where visitors can enjoy nature walks.
