Rolpa is a hill district in Lumbini Province, historically significant as the birthplace and epicenter of the 1996-2006 Maoist insurgency in Nepal, which ultimately led to the abolition of the monarchy and the establishment of a federal republic. The district is predominantly inhabited by Magar communities, particularly the Kham Magar, who form the backbone of the Maoist movement and remain influential in contemporary Nepali politics.
