Introduction

Makawanpur Overview

Sindhuli is a historic hill district southeast of Kathmandu, famous for the Battle of Sindhuli Gadhi (1767), where Gorkhali forces under Prithvi Narayan Shah routed a British East India Company expedition, marking a turning point in Nepal's unification campaign. The district's main town, Sindhulimadhi, is named after the goddess Kamalamai and hosts the famous Kamalamai Temple, a major religious site. Sindhuli is predominantly inhabited by Tamang, Magar, Newar, and Brahmin-Chhetri communities, with diverse cultural traditions. The district is connected to Kathmandu by the BP Highway, one of Nepal's most important roads. Agriculture, including rice, maize, and citrus fruits, is the primary occupation, with growing remittance dependency. The district's hills, forests, and the Kamala River offer opportunities for eco-tourism. Recent infrastructure development, including the Sindhuli Road, has significantly improved connectivity and economic prospects.
