Kalikot (कालिकोट)

Kalikot is a rugged, mid-Karnali hill district traversed by the infamous Karnali Highway, often called the "death-trap highway" for its narrow, cliff-hugging road carved into the steep mountainsides. The district is predominantly inhabited by Chhetri, Thakuri, Kami, and Magar communities, with strong Hindu traditions and rich cultural heritage. Manma, the headquarters, is a hilltop town offering scenic views of the Karnali River gorge. The district's economy is primarily agricultural, with rice, maize, and millet as staple crops, supplemented by animal husbandry and remittances from migrant workers. Kalikot is known for its difficult terrain, limited infrastructure, and high poverty rates, making it one of Nepal's most challenging districts for development. The district features traditional Newar-influenced architecture, ancient temples, and the sacred Kailash Lake. Recent road improvements and the Karnali Highway expansion have begun to improve connectivity, though the district remains one of the most remote in Nepal. The traditional Kalikoti folk music and dances are an important part of the cultural heritage.
